On May 13, the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov, gave an interview to Al Mayadeen TV channel from Lebanon.
Mr. Lavrov explained the whole diplomatic process which has been taking place since the Syria crisis has begun. The Russian diplomat accurately described how the situation worsened and what were/are the main disagreements between anti- and pro-Bashar al-Assad.
Without overtly taking side with the Assad regime, Mr. Lavrov insisted that Russia could not accept making the "disappearance" of the Syrian leader a precondition for any political solution, stressing such a solution needs all the Syrian political community to be represented.
Yet, Mr. Lavrov regretted, countries like the United States still follows this no-Assad approach which has been one of the "causes of the deadlock in the Syrian crisis for many months," the Russian official emphasized. However for the International Conference on Syria to take place, "we continue our actions and contact with many partners," Mr. Lavrov said.
