The UN Organization Stabilization Mission in DRC (MONUSCO) voiced its concern about renewed clashes between rebels from the 23 March Movement (M23) and the national armed forces in the eastern city of Goma.
"The Mission reports that initial skirmishes - in Kibati and Rusayo, some 12 kilometers from Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, - escalated to the use of heavy calibre weapons, mortars and rocket launchers," UN spokesperson Eduardo del Buey told. DiploNews feared such developments could compromise the continuation of the Kampala Talks.
The Organ Troika Summit of the Heads of State and Government of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) held in Cape Town, South Africa on May 10 had reiterated its call for urgent attention to be given to the grave humanitarian situation in the Eastern DRC.
