US Deputy Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter met with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf at the Pentagon. Mr. Carter praised President Sirleaf's accomplishments towards the rebuilding of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) which now participate in the stabilization ot the country and the surrounding region through its contribution to the African-led International Support Mission to Mali (AFISMA), the US official said.
As the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) draws down over the next few years and that DOD Operation Onward Liberty ends in December 2014, Mr. Carter assured Mrs. Sirleaf that the United States will support Liberia to successfully go through the transition with initiatives like the ongoing training and cooperation programs between the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) and the AFL.
In Liberia, "a nation long wracked by civil war and instability, the military once discredited as the puppet of former president and convicted war criminal Charles Taylor has become a respected organization under the direction of the democratically elected civilian leadership," a DOD report stated in June 2012.
