The situation in Syria continues to deteriorate and the violence threatens to spread to neighbouring countries, MEPs agreed.
Among them, Elmar Brok, a German member of the EPP group who is the chair of the foreign affairs committee, answered to questions asked by the European Parliament's press service.
As for the situation of the refugees, he said that repercussions on the neighboring countries like Jordan and Turkey gives "many reasons to be concerned."
However, he said, as long as it's "still not clear which parts of the opposition can be supported," further support by Saudi Arabia and Qatar could "only lead to more problems later."
Indeed, Mr. Brok believes the EU has to do everything it can in order to preserve Syria from becoming the battlefield of a proxy war. "We have to ensure Syria is not a battle field for certain forces, which have nothing to do with Syria, like Saudi Arabia and Iran," the MEP insisted.
