China-Mexico relations have been developing at a fast pace since the two countries became strategic partners in 2003. According to the Chinese government, China is Mexico's second largest trading partner, while Mexico is China's second biggest in Latin America. The two-way trade stood at USD 36.7 billion in 2012.
During a state visit to Mexico, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged on May 4 to "enhance political dialogue on bilateral, regional and global issues so as to consolidate the China-Mexico comprehensive strategic partnership," an official statement said. Mexico is the last leg of President Xi's three-nation Latin America tour, which started with Trinidad and Tobago. "We have the opportunity to give a new boost to Mexico’s relationship with China on the basis of the coincidences between the two governments which are practically starting at the same time," said Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.
The two leaders also agreed to further consolidate the role of the China-Mexico bi-national commission and to promote overall cooperation between China and Latin America and the Caribbean and make concerted efforts to establish a China-Latin America cooperation forum. President Nieto announced a state visit to China in 2014 in response to an invitation by his Chinese counterpart.
