World Leaders welcomed France's "important contribution" in dismantling "the terrorist safe haven in northern Mali," an area that is part of a global terrorist threat "arc running from Mauritania in the west to Somalia in the east."
On June 14, US President Barack Obama informed the Congress that the total number of US military personnel deployed to Niger is approximately 180. This deployment will continue to provide support for intelligence collection and to facilitate intelligence sharing with French forces conducting operations in Mali, Mr. Obama's letter said. Also, there has been information within the United Nations that China could send more than 500 peacekeepers to Mali as part of the "swift deployment of a UN stabilization force" encouraged by the G8 leaders.
Europe has done much of the international effort to support Mali and will continue to do so, affirmed EU Commissioner Andris Piebalgs. In April, The CSDP military mission EUTM Mali has begun to train the Malian army and in May, the high-level international donor conference in Brussels pledged more than EUR 3.25 billion for the reconstruction of Mali, Mr. Piebalgs explained. Beyond optimism brought by such a diverse support, the "holding of the presidential elections in Mali on July 28 (will be) the only way to restore legitimacy there," the EU's Election Observation Mission (EOM) Louis Michel underlined.
