"We are now actually facing a deadlock in the Cyprus problem for which no one else but occupying Turkey and Mr. Eroglu, are responsible", said President Christofias in his speech during the religious celebrations of St.Maron at the Cathedral of Panagia ton Chariton.
President Christofias spoke about the successes and convergences achieved in the negotiations over the last five years which, as he said, are considered to be important improvements compared to previous plans for solution which were rightly rejected by the Cyprus people before they were imposed upon them. "We changed the negative punitive atmosphere which was created internationally and especially in Europe after the referenda expressing the correct judgment of the Cyprus people, and proved Turkey’s intransigence and the good will of our side", he said.
"With determination and sincerity", he continued, "we managed to create the most important perspective for the country on strategic, political and financial level since the creation of the Cyprus Republic by delimitating the Exclusive Economic Zone, signing contracts, discovering the natural gas, amidst Turkish ships and airplanes, and by launching the second licensing round", and he added: "We achieved this having the entire global community standing by us at a very crucial turning point in Cyprus’ future."
"This was also true", Mr. Christofias said, "during the Cyprus Presidency of the EU." "At the same time", he added, " the Greek-Cypriot side showed its determination and assertiveness by not giving in to any proposals and pressures to change the negotiation procedure and to accept an inept international conference which would clearly lead to arbitration and suffocating deadlines, a procedure already tried and failed." "I wish and hope that the same determination will be shown in the future, otherwise our problem will be doomed to result in a bad settlement", he noted.
"The Maronite community", said Mr. Christofias, "is an integral part of the Cyprus people", adding that they too suffered along with the Greek-Cypriots during the difficult times of the coup d’état and the Turkish invasion. "The present government", he said, "has placed the Maronite community’s progress and prosperity among its highest priorities."
