New EU aid to support democratic transition in Tunisia

EU sends message of continued support to Tunisia

The European Union continues to support the reform process in Tunisia with new projects announced in Tunis today. Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle who visits Tunisia as the first EU representative after the swearing-in of the new government, signed two contracts to finance actions on preventing gender violence and improving the performance of the justice sector in the area of juvenile delinquency

"These are just two out of many examples how the EU, as a committed and reliable partner, delivers on its promises to Tunisia. Since the start of the revolution we have declared our readiness to assist Tunisia in the process of transformation focusing on democratisation, political and economic reforms so that the citizens can feel the difference, and we are doing just that," Commissioner Füle said after the signature at the EU Delegation in Tunis.

The first project is a grant contract of EUR 550.000 aimed at preventing violence based on gender and on helping the victims of gender violence in the North-East of Tunisia, in the governorates of El-Kef, Jendouba and Béja by preparing advisors to train specialised staff dealing with this problem and providing legal, psychological and socio-medical support to the victims. The three-years project should raise awareness with respect to violence based on gender. Furthermore, it will ensure that victims have better access to adequate help and that staff dealing with them are better trained to offer legal, psychological and medical services. The programme will be implemented by a Spanish NGO (Fundación CIDEAL de Cooperación y Investigación).

Commissioner Füle signed also an agreement with UNICEF worth EUR 1.8 million covering the implementation of the action related to juvenile justice within the framework of the EU-Tunisia cooperation programme of support to the justice sector adopted last year. This specific action with UNICEF is designed to ensure the protection of young delinquents and to provide them with support during the judicial procedures and their detention until their reintegration into the society and is part of a broader program to reinforce the independence and professionalism in the justice sector.
