United States Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Republic of Kosovo Minister of Foreign Affairs Enver Hoxhaj signed a Status of Forces Agreement today, February 18, 2012 at the Office of the Prime Minister in Pristina, Kosovo.
The signing of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) between the Government of Kosovo (GoK) and the United States of America reaffirms and strengthens the deep partnership between the two countries. It supports our ongoing bilateral cooperation and partnership to promote the safety and security of the people of Kosovo and to contribute to stability and peace in the Balkans.
The SOFA provides the legal framework within which American military and U.S. Department of Defense civilian personnel who are not part of the NATO mission will operate in Kosovo. On that basis, these personnel will be working with members of the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) to further develop the KSF’s capacity to perform its four core missions of Firefighting, Search and Rescue, Hazardous Material Disposal, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal.
