Arab League aims to develop an unified Arab stance towards the Somali crisis

Arab League discusses Draft Resolution on Somalia

The Council of Arab League started on Sunday an extraordinary meeting at the level of permanent envoys on means of supporting Somalia and the international conference on Somalia due on 23 February 2012 in London. The meeting was chaired by HE Saleh Abdullah Al Buainain, Qatar's Permanent Representative to the Arab League in presence of the Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al Araby. The meeting reviewed a detailed report by the Arab League on the latest developments in Somalia and a draft resolution on the Arab action plan to provide the political, financial and security support to the African country. The draft resolution will be submitted during the London conference.

This meeting aims to develop an unified Arab stance towards the Somali crisis, which will be presented at the London International Conference on Somalia, Ambassador Al Buainain said in his brief speech before the Council. For his part, the Arab League Chief underlined the importance of Arab coordination and consultation to overcome the humanitarian, security and economic crisis afflicting Somalia, noting the amelioration of the security situation and the resumption of diplomatic ties with Somalia by a number of countries since the expulsion of the Mujahideen Youth Movement (MYM) from Mogadishu in mid-2011. Meanwhile, he expressed regret over the continued attacks there, especially after al-Shabab has formally joined Al Qaeda.
