President Xi urges joint efforts to advance China-US relations

Xi Jinping holds Telephone Conversation with his US Counterpart Barack Obama on the Expansion of Cooperation and Mutual Respect between China and the United States, urging both sides to find a Path for New-type of Interpower Relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday that China is ready to work with the United States to advance the cooperative partnership between the two countries.

Xi made the remarks while meeting with US Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew, who is visiting Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The president hailed the fruitful outcomes of bilateral relations in the past 30 years, with these results greatly benefiting the two peoples and promoting peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region as well as the world.

China and the United States have close relations and share common interests and there are also differences, Xi said, calling on the two sides to treat the bilateral ties from a strategic height and long-term perspective; increase dialogue, mutual trust and cooperation; respect and take each other's vital interests and key concerns into consideration; and successfully manage their differences with the aim of constructing a new type of relationship.

"I attach great importance to China-US relations, and am willing to work with the US side to jointly advance the cooperative partnership," he said.

Xi referred the economic ties between the two nations as "a ballast stone" with a nature of mutual benefits, urging the two nations to objectively view each other's development stages, respect each other's interests for further development and regard the other party's opportunity and challenges as its own.

China's new president also voiced his hope that the two sides could step up their coordination via bilateral mechanisms such as the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue and multilateral frameworks of the Group of 20 and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation to promote global economic governance and score a robust, sustainable and balanced growth in the world economy.

Lew congratulated Xi on his becoming China's president, saying President Obama is firmly committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation and maintaining the growth of US-China relations.

As the world's two biggest economies, the United States and China have responsibilities of vital importance in promoting the economic growth in the two nations and the world at large, Lew said.

He called on the two sides to enhance cooperation on economic and strategic issues facing them and properly manage their differences.

The US side has paid much attention to China's concerns on issues such as investment by Chinese companies in the United States, US exports of high-tech products to China and the recognition of China's market economy status, Lew added.

The two sides also exchanged views on the situation in the Korean Peninsular as well as network security.

This is Lew's first China visit since he took office last month. The former White House chief of staff is also the first major foreign visitor received by Beijing after China completed a once-in-a-decade leadership transition last week.
