Rwanda and Uganda meet over Border Security

In an effort to strengthen border security between Rwanda and Uganda, the Ministry of Local Government has hosted a two day meeting of the 4th Session of Rwanda-Uganda Governance and Security sub-commission, from the 20th to 21th February 2012.

In his opening remarks Minister Musoni James emphasized the importance of this meeting in the aspects of cross-border trade and called upon delegates to ensure follow up and implementation of the decisions made

“The Governance and Border Security Meeting if convened regularly and actions agreed on implemented jointly will serve as a basis to build our strong governance and security systems together with enhanced cooperation between local governments and security organs even cross border communities”. He added

On local government issues, the meeting commended districts on both sides that have met and strengthened cooperation and emphasized that all border districts should continue to hold regular meetings to enhance cross border cooperation.

The Ugandan Minister of local Government Adolf Mwesigye said:

“I hope that the district leaders of the two countries can come up with model programmes and recommendations to improve the welfare and social services of our border communities to whom the realization of our cooperation has a direct impact”.

On security issue the meeting recommended that public education should be carried out on cross border crimes related issues, counterfeit of currencies, combatting infiltration and terrorism activities, preventing drug and human trafficking.
