In Brussels this afternoon (Monday 4 March), the Irish Presidency has, on behalf of the EU, signed a Customs Agreement with Canada.
Ambassador Rory Montgomery, Ireland’s Permanent Representative to the EU, signed the agreement along with Heinz Zourek, Director General of Taxation and Customs Union on behalf of the Commission and David Plunkett, Ambassador of Canada to the EU on behalf of Canada.
This agreement establishes minimum standards for risk management techniques, working towards mutual recognition of these techniques, as well as risk standards, security controls, container security and trade partnership programmes.
Ambassador Montgomery welcomed the agreement, saying "Canada is a natural ally and important trade partner for the EU. This agreement strengthens that relationship, facilitating as well as securing trade between us".
