Polish President Komorowski wants stronger EU answer to crisis

The answer to the crisis is a stronger EU and a stronger euro, President Bronisław Komorowski said on Wednesday at a meeting with the leaders of the Visegrad Group countries and France and Germany in Warsaw's Belvedere Palace.

Attending the meeting were Slovak, Czech and Hungarian PMs Robert Fico, Petr Necas and Viktor Orban, French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Polish government leader Donald Tusk.

In a toast preceding a gala dinner Komorowski reminded that the EU was going through a difficult period marked by unemployment, political instability and waning trust in the continent's political elites.

"Our answer to the crisis in European countries should be to strengthen the EU, its institutions and its common currency, which has become a part of the European identity."

The Polish president stressed that the EU should put its reforms through "with determination" despite the fact that they might be painful, as in the long run this will boost economic growth, secure new jobs and give hope to coming generations. He also spoke out for strengthening Europe's defence potential, European foreign policy and cooperation between the EU and NATO.

B. Komorowski said the EU should show openness towards further enlargement and tighten relations with its neighbours. This, he said, will help reinforce the community's global position.

He also reminded that the power of the European project was most visible where its achievements like peace, security, free travel and rule of law were non-existent. In this context Bronisław Komorowski said Europe should also show sensitivity towards turbulences in other parts of the world, especially Syria and North Africa.

Referring to the EU's eastern policy, president Komorowski remarked that the EU's eastern neighbours Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova were tightening their ties to the community and had chances to make further progress along this path. He especially mentioned Ukraine's strivings for an association agreement with the EU and expressed hope that Ukraine will manage to meet its related obligations. He added that the November Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius will be of major importance in this respect.

Speaking out against divisions in the EU, Komorowski noted that only unity will allow Europe to master the challenges which lay ahead. "These are challenges which we will be only able to cope with together. For me our meeting today is proof of a unity striven for by many generations of Europeans. Let us not waste their efforts by divisions within the community. Instead, let us do all we can to make it stronger as a whole", the president appealed
