Amid budget cuts, U.S. challenges Europe to match NATO contributions

At a NATO member meeting in Munich this week, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta addressed the impact America’s congressionally mandated $487 billion cut in defense spending over the next decade will have on the transatlantic partnership. With a smaller yet increasingly capable force, the U.S. military will identify a brigade to serve as its land force contribution to the NATO response force.
